A princess is a woman who lives a life of wealth, privilege, and adoration. She expects to be fawned over by everyone and may be stuck up or conceited. A princess often has a kind of carefree exuberance that comes from her position in life. Princess may also refer to a fancy dress or tiara.
Princess Alice of Battenberg, mother of Prince Philip and grandmother to Queen Elizabeth, makes her first appearance in The Crown in season 3 episode 4. Princess Alice was a fascinating woman with an illustrious life full of hardships and triumphs.
She was born into a family of nobility and royalty in 1863, and from an early age she had a taste of the high life. Her grandmother, Queen Mary, instructed her in the finer points of royal etiquette and her parents taught her about the Christian faith. Alice also had nannies to tend to her throughout her childhood and she was a Girl Guide (the British equivalent of the Girl Scouts). By 1967, as seen in The Crown, Alice moved into Buckingham Palace due to poor health and a political crisis in her home country of Greece. She died two years later. Her remains were transferred from a vault in her birthplace of Windsor Castle to the Church of Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. She is buried there in accordance with her wishes. Her story proves the old adage that truth is stranger than fiction.
