What is a Princess?

A female sovereign (a monarch’s daughter) or a lady of high rank, consort to a prince. A crown princess is the heir apparent to a royal throne. A princess can also be a hereditary sovereign, head of state in her own right.

In the past, many stories presented princesses as women desperately waiting for their Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet. Thankfully, Disney has taken steps to change this message and more recently we’ve seen strong and independent princesses like Ariel, Merida, and Moana. However, younger generations still watch these movies and may take this as the norm for how they should live their lives.

To become a princess, you must be born into a royalty family or marry one. For example, Kate Middleton became a princess when she married into the British Royal Family but her children won’t inherit her title, as it can only be handed down from a male royalty member to a female one.

Regardless of how you become a princess, the important thing is to be true to yourself and not let anyone tell you who you are. Learn from Belle who marched to her own beat and stood up for what she believed in, or from Merida who saved her mother despite the consequences, or from Cinderella who sacrificed her own desires for those of her family.

Another princess-like quality is to be intelligent and love to learn. You can do this by studying hard in school and always being willing to try new things. Finally, a princess knows how to be gracious. So if you see someone who’s having a rough time, help them be better by being kind and generous. Just be sure to use your manners when doing so!
