Princess (also, “princesse”) is a title for a female member of a monarch’s family or for a consort of a prince. This word is derived from the Latin “princessa” and it has been used in English since the 14th century. The eldest daughter of a sovereign is usually called a crown princess.
The Princess Royal carries out up to three overseas tours each year, in addition to her work as a member of the Royal Family in support of charities and organisations across the Commonwealth. She also attends a number of ceremonial events led by Her Majesty, such as Trooping the Colour and Remembrance Day at the Cenotaph.
She has one of the busiest working schedules of any member of the Royal Family, and meets guests from all walks of life at garden parties held each year at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. She also presents medals to those who have been awarded honours in the New Year’s Honours List and the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
The Princess Royal has a strong affinity with sport and has been the president of the British Olympic Association since 2016. She competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics with the British equestrian team, and her daughter, Zara Tindall, followed suit at London 2012. She has continued to make regular visits to events such as the World Cup and Commonwealth Games. She is a Patron of over 25 charities and organisations. She is a Trustee of the National Ballet of Canada and a Vice-President of Unicef UK.
