A woman who is a member of a royal family, usually the daughter or granddaughter of a monarch or other royal or noble person. A princess typically carries out duties and responsibilities associated with her status, including attending ceremonial events, promoting charitable causes, and maintaining diplomatic relationships. She may also be a hereditary sovereign, head of state in her own right.
In modern usage, the term has taken on a negative connotation; it is often used to describe someone who has an overly entitled, spoiled, and demanding personality. However, in some cultures, the word is still used as a form of flattery and is considered to be a compliment.
Princess is also a title given to the wife of a crown prince, or one who will become queen when her husband succeeds to the throne. As such, she is constantly surrounded by people wanting her to look pretty and appropriately royal. It can be challenging to balance that with a true sense of empathy for those she interacts with.
The late Diana, Princess of Wales is a great example of this. She was a compassionate mother to her sons, and she worked tirelessly on behalf of children, AIDS victims, and landmine survivors. Her empathy was her superpower. When she appeared at an event for mental health, for example, she wore earrings that had been given to her by the mother of a girl who had committed suicide. The gesture was both subtle and meaningful.
