Every little girl has dreamed of being a princess at one time or another. But what does it really mean to be a princess?
In medieval times, being a princess often meant political intrigue and danger. Princesses were expected to host many important guests, support their husband’s political endeavors, and mediate between members of the court. They were also usually kept under tight security, and had limited personal freedom.
However, as women gained more independence and respect throughout European history, the definition of a princess changed. A princess could be the unmarried daughter of a monarch, or she could be the wife of a prince. She could even be a hereditary sovereign—the head of state in her own right. For example, Constance of Antioch became a princess regnant in the 12th century. Some princesses are still hereditary royalty in the modern sense, such as Norway’s Crown Princess Sonja Haraldsen.
Be a true princess by having excellent manners and being a kind person. It’s also important to practice humility. The most beautiful princesses have a good heart, and they’re always thinking of others first. Princesses also use their courage and intelligence to help people in need, so try your hand at problem solving. And, don’t be afraid to stand up for the rights of people in need, just like Queen Sikhanyiso Dlamini of Swaziland. She fights against outdated restrictions and pursues her dreams, just like you should.
